Into the Karst — From the Inside

The karst landscape of China is best known from above — peaks rising from the plain, reflected in the Yulong River. Canyoneering takes you into a completely different version of the same landscape: the narrow, water-carved slot canyons hidden between the limestone towers, where streams have cut passages through the rock over millions of years.

Descending a canyon is a full-body experience. You’ll scramble over wet boulders, slide down natural rock chutes polished smooth by centuries of water flow, wade chest-deep through turquoise pools in the shade of vertical canyon walls, and jump from ledges into clear plunge pools below. Every section of the canyon demands problem-solving, physical confidence, and a willingness to get completely wet.

Our certified guides know every section of the canyons we run — where to jump, where to swim, where fixed ropes are rigged for technical descents. Group size is capped at 8 to keep the experience personal and manageable. Water levels are assessed before every trip: if conditions are unsafe, we reschedule without question.

Frequently Asked Questions

How strong a swimmer do I need to be? +
You need to be a confident, independent swimmer — able to swim at least 25 metres in open water without assistance. You do not need to be a strong open-water swimmer, but you must be comfortable with your head going underwater and swimming in moving water wearing a wetsuit and life jacket. Non-swimmers cannot join this activity.
What exactly does canyoneering involve? +
Canyoneering (also called river tracing or gorge walking) involves descending a natural stream canyon using a combination of techniques: scrambling over boulders, wading and swimming through pools, sliding down natural rock slides, jumping into deep plunge pools, and rappelling short drops using fixed ropes. Every canyon section is different — your guide leads the way and assists at every technical section.
Is it dangerous? +
Like all adventure activities, canyoneering carries inherent risk — primarily swift water and slippery rock surfaces. We manage this through rigorous guide assessment of water levels before every trip (we cancel if conditions are unsafe), mandatory helmets and wetsuits, fixed ropes on technical sections, and strict group size limits of 8. We have run this activity safely for years and prioritise turning back over taking risks.
What is the best season? +
Late spring to early autumn (April–October) is the main canyoneering season, when water levels are high enough for swimming and the water temperature is comfortable in a wetsuit. The best water flow is typically May–July following rains. We do not run canyoneering in winter or when water levels are too low or dangerously high after typhoon rain.
Can I combine this with other activities? +
Canyoneering pairs well with rock climbing — both take you into the vertical world of the karst landscape from different angles. Some groups do a morning canyon descent followed by an afternoon climbing session. Ask us when booking and we'll plan a full-day itinerary.
