Walk Where the Postcards Are Made

The images that made this part of China famous โ€” limestone peaks rising from misty rice paddies, farmers tending fields beneath impossibly shaped towers, bamboo groves along winding rivers โ€” are all accessible on foot. The countryside around Chinaโ€™s karst landscape is one of the most rewarding walking destinations in China.

Our guides know routes that most visitors never find: ancient stone-paved paths between villages, ridge trails with panoramic views of the karst landscape, farmland footpaths running alongside the Yulong River, and summit approaches to peaks with 360-degree views of the surrounding karst field.

Half-day tours focus on a single area โ€” the Yulong River valley, the Moon Hill area, or the karst ridge trails around Xingping. Full-day tours combine terrain types, often ending at a viewpoint or traditional village for lunch. All routes are graded and matched to group fitness โ€” we donโ€™t rush anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult are the hikes? +
We offer routes from Easy (flat riverside paths, suitable for all ages and fitness levels) to Moderate (ridge trails with elevation gain of 200โ€“400 metres). When booking, tell us your group's fitness level and we'll select the right route. We can also tailor the pace and route on the day based on how the group is finding it.
What is the best season for hiking in China? +
Spring (Marchโ€“May) and Autumn (Septemberโ€“November) are the most pleasant โ€” temperatures are comfortable and the landscape is at its most photogenic. Summer (Juneโ€“August) is hot and can be rainy but the rice paddies are vivid green. Winter (Decemberโ€“February) is cool and clear, often with morning mist โ€” excellent for photography. We run hikes year-round.
What footwear do I need? +
For easy trails, sturdy trainers or walking shoes are fine. For moderate ridge trails, we recommend proper hiking boots with ankle support, especially in wet conditions. Avoid flip flops or smooth-soled shoes โ€” karst rock and muddy paths can be slippery.
Can I combine hiking with other activities? +
Absolutely. A popular combination is a morning kayak on the Yulong River followed by an afternoon hike along the ridge above it โ€” you see the same landscape from two completely different perspectives. Hiking also pairs well with a local culture afternoon visiting villages along the route. Let us know when booking and we'll build the itinerary.
Are the trails crowded? +
Some of the most famous viewpoints in China (like Moon Hill) can be busy with day-trippers. Our guides take you on less-travelled routes โ€” ancient paths between villages that most tourists never find. Even on a busy weekend, you can spend hours in the Chinese countryside without seeing another tour group.
