The People Behind the Landscape

China’s karst landscape has been home to human communities for thousands of years. The villages scattered between the limestone towers are not museum pieces — they are living communities where traditional crafts, farming methods, and customs have been passed down through generations, existing alongside the modern tourism economy in a fascinating cultural blend.

Our local culture programme takes small groups into real villages with introductions through local contacts our team has built over years of operating in the area. Depending on your interests and available time, tours can include: traditional paper making or ink painting workshops, local cooking classes using Guangxi ingredients, a visit to a working farm, an evening cormorant fishing demonstration on the Li River, or simply time to walk slowly through a traditional village and understand what daily life looks like.

This is our most flexible programme — we tailor it to your group. Tell us your interests (food, crafts, history, photography, children’s activities) and we’ll build the experience accordingly.

What to Expect

  • Visits to traditional Guangxi villages off the tourist circuit
  • Hands-on workshops: cooking, paper-making, or ink painting
  • Evening cormorant fishing on bamboo rafts (seasonal)

  • Traditional rice farming and agricultural landscape walks
  • English-speaking guide with deep local connections
  • Fully customisable — tell us your group's interests

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this different from a generic tour? +
Our guides are not tour operators showing you "performance culture" — they have real relationships with the communities we visit, built over years. You'll meet people who actually live and work in these villages, not performers in traditional costume for tourists. We also strictly limit group size to 12, so the experience is personal and genuine rather than a crowd event.
Is the cormorant fishing experience ethical? +
We partner with fishermen who have practised cormorant fishing as a traditional livelihood for generations. The demonstrations we arrange are an extension of their actual work, not a performance manufactured for tourists. The birds are not harmed — the traditional method involves a loose ring around the neck that prevents swallowing large fish, and the birds are well cared for. We'll be honest about this and answer any questions about animal welfare.
Can I request a specific activity (e.g. cooking class)? +
Yes — this is our most customisable programme. When booking, tell us what interests your group most. Food and cooking, traditional crafts, photography, rice farming, market culture, children's activities — we'll build the itinerary around your priorities, subject to seasonal and local availability.
Is this suitable for children? +
This is one of our best activities for families with children. The pace is gentle, there are no physical challenges, and children tend to be welcomed enthusiastically by local communities. Hands-on workshops (making dumplings, paper folding, simple crafts) are particularly engaging for younger participants. We've run culture tours for children as young as 3.
Do we need to speak Chinese? +
Not at all. Your English-speaking guide handles all communication with local community members and will translate conversations, context, and explanations throughout. In fact, not sharing a common language with community members is often part of what makes the experience warm and memorable — smiles, gestures, and shared activities cross all barriers.
