Karst Scenery from the Water

The Yulong River winds for 43 kilometres through Chinaโ€™s karst landscape, passing between hundreds of limestone peaks before joining the famous Li River. It is widely considered one of Chinaโ€™s most beautiful waterways โ€” and paddling it at your own pace, without the crowds of tourist rafts, is one of the finest ways to experience this part of China.

We offer both sit-in kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on the Yulongโ€™s calm, shallow waters. The river is ideal for beginners โ€” the current is gentle, the water is clear, and the depth is typically only 0.5โ€“1.5 metres. Your guide will teach basic paddling technique in the first 15 minutes, and most first-timers are gliding confidently within half an hour.

Morning sessions are particularly magical โ€” early mist rises off the water between the karst peaks, local fishermen pole their bamboo rafts past, and the river is nearly empty of other craft. Full-day tours include a riverside lunch break at a local village.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be able to swim? +
Basic swimming ability is recommended but not strictly required โ€” life jackets are worn throughout, and the Yulong is shallow (typically 0.5โ€“1.5 metres) along our route. Non-swimmers should mention this when booking so we can assign a single kayak rather than a SUP board, and keep them close to the guide.
What's the difference between kayaking and SUP? +
Kayaking involves sitting in or on a kayak and using a double-bladed paddle โ€” more stable and less physically demanding. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) involves standing on a wide board and using a single-bladed paddle โ€” requires more balance but gives a better view and is a great core workout. Most first-timers find both easy within 15โ€“20 minutes.
What's the best time of day to go? +
Early morning (8:00โ€“9:00 start) is the most atmospheric time โ€” morning mist over the water, fewer people, and the best light for photography. The river is calm throughout the day, but midday can be very hot in summer. Late afternoon has beautiful golden light. We recommend morning for the full-day tour and either morning or afternoon for half-day.
Can children and older adults do this? +
Yes โ€” kayaking is our most inclusive activity. Children from age 6 can paddle with a parent in a tandem kayak, and older adults regularly enjoy the tour at a relaxed pace. There is no age upper limit. The flat-water Yulong is gentle enough for almost anyone in reasonable health.
What happens if I fall in? +
You'll get wet โ€” and probably laugh about it. The water is clean, shallow, and warm (especially in summer). Your life jacket will keep you afloat immediately, and the guide will assist you back onto your vessel quickly. Capsizing is rare on the Yulong's calm water, but not cause for concern when it does happen. Bring a change of clothes for afterwards.
