A World Beneath the Karst

The same geological forces that shaped China’s towering peaks have carved an equally extraordinary world beneath the surface. Guangxi is home to some of China’s most spectacular karst cave systems — ancient underground landscapes formed over hundreds of millions of years of water dissolving limestone.

Our cave exploration tours take small groups into wild cave systems away from the tourist crowds. These are not commercial caves with floodlights and handrails — they are raw, natural environments where your guide’s headlamp illuminates stalactites, stalagmites, underground pools, and cave passages that few visitors ever see.

Routes are selected based on group fitness and experience. Some sections require crawling through tight passages or wading through ankle-deep underground streams — all part of the adventure. Our WMAI-certified guides are trained to manage any situation underground, and group size is strictly limited to ensure a safe, personal experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this suitable for people with claustrophobia? +
It depends on the severity. Mild claustrophobia is often manageable — the caves we use have a mix of open chambers and narrower passages, and we never force anyone into a section they're not comfortable with. Severe claustrophobia would make this tour very difficult. Please mention your concerns when booking and we'll discuss the specific cave and passages.
Will I get wet or dirty? +
Very likely yes. Some passages involve wading through shallow underground streams (ankle to knee depth), and cave surfaces are often muddy or damp. We provide a cave suit over your clothes. Wear old shoes you're happy to get muddy — or sandals you can rinse off. Bring a change of clothes for afterwards.
How deep underground do we go? +
The caves we use descend to varying depths depending on the route. Typically we explore passages between 20–80 metres below the surface. You won't feel significant air pressure changes. The temperature underground is a consistent 16–18°C (60–64°F) year-round, which feels refreshing in summer and cool in winter.
What if someone in the group needs to turn back? +
Safety first, always. If any participant needs to exit early — whether due to discomfort, fatigue, or any other reason — the guide will safely escort them out without disrupting the experience for others (when group size allows). We never leave anyone unsupervised underground. This is covered in the pre-entry safety briefing.
Are these tourist caves or wild caves? +
Wild caves — not tourist attractions. Guangxi has many commercial caves with paved paths, coloured lighting, and gift shops. Our tours go into unspoiled natural cave systems that require proper equipment and guidance. The formations are untouched and the experience is entirely different from a tourist cave visit.
