For city journeys and other day experiences, 2–3 days is usually enough. For multi-day soft adventures — desert, grassland, tea-forest or RV road trips — and for larger groups or peak season (May–October), we recommend booking 1–3 weeks ahead so we can secure camps, vehicles and the right guide. When in doubt, just WhatsApp us and we'll tell you what's possible for your dates.

No experience is required. Our soft adventures are deliberately beginner-friendly: steppe riding is taught from scratch at a gentle pace, tea-forest walks are easy, and wild-luxury camps and RV road trips are about comfort, not endurance. City journeys are walking-based cultural days. Your guide handles the logistics and instruction throughout — you just turn up.

Many are. Wild-luxury camps, gentle steppe riding, tea-forest walks and the city journeys all work well for families, and private trips let us set the pace around your group. Suitability and any age guidance depend on the specific trip and season — tell us your children's ages when you enquire and we'll recommend the best fit and adapt the itinerary.

Soft adventures are low-intensity by design — the point is real nature at a relaxed pace, not a fitness test. City journeys involve a fair amount of walking over a full day. The main thing to be aware of is altitude on high-plateau and RV trips (the G318 and Tibetan plateau), which affects everyone regardless of fitness — ascend gradually and consult your doctor beforehand. Tell us your comfort level and we'll tailor the pace.

It depends on the trip. Wild-luxury camps include the tent or yurt, bedding, meals and guiding; desert, ATV and riding trips include the vehicle or horse and the required safety gear; RV road trips include the motorhome and route planning; city journeys include an English-speaking guide, entries, local transport and some meals. We keep groups small — a maximum of 8–10 on soft adventures — and private and solo bookings are welcome. City journeys are private by default (typically up to 6). Private trips let us customise the route, pace and itinerary entirely around you. For larger groups, get in touch and we'll arrange additional guides.

Most nationalities need a Chinese tourist visa, though many now qualify for visa-free entry or transit — always check the current rules for your passport. The main international gateways are Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, with onward high-speed rail or domestic flights to your trip. All our guides speak English — this is a core requirement for working with us. Our primary team is bilingual in English and Mandarin, and on cultural experiences and village visits your guide handles all translation and communication with local hosts and communities.

Trips are private and quoted per group based on the itinerary, group size, season and inclusions — contact us for a quote. On the ground, payments in China use WeChat Pay, Alipay or cash (RMB); international credit cards are not widely accepted. Deposit and balance terms are confirmed at the time of booking.

We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers adventure travel and your specific trip type — some standard policies exclude activities or high-altitude travel, so check the fine print. We don't require proof of insurance to participate, but we advise all guests to have appropriate coverage. World Nomads and similar adventure-focused insurers are popular choices for travellers to China.

Your guide assesses conditions throughout. Most trips run rain or shine, and multi-day soft adventures have flexible itineraries we can reshuffle around the weather. We only cancel or reroute when conditions are genuinely unsafe — and if we cancel for safety reasons, we reschedule at no extra charge or offer a full refund.

For day experiences: cancel 48+ hours before for a full refund; 24–48 hours before for a 50% refund; under 24 hours, no refund (guide time and logistics are already committed). Multi-day soft adventures involve advance commitments (camps, vehicles, permits), so their terms are confirmed in writing at booking. Cancellations we make for weather or safety: full reschedule or full refund, no questions asked.

Yes — this is what we do best. We regularly combine destinations into one trip: a Beijing city journey with a Bashang grassland camp, Xi'an with a Silk Road desert leg, or Shanghai with the tea forests around Hangzhou.
